Friday afternoon I got a text from Brian telling me that he was home if Alex wanted to hang out with him after school. That worked out perfectly since Bri's Girl Scout troop had plans to help out at the middle school uniform closet. Ms. Solan is the teacher in charge of the closet and the girls have an idea to reorganize it. They want to put rolling racks in the closet for the clothes to hang on. We need the help of the PTSA and the principal to do this, but I think we have a good chance of getting everything accomplished. When they are finished I think they want it to look more like a store verses something where people just pile stuff up. Anyway, the girls folded and organized what they could. Everything is separated by color and type (pants, shorts, skirts).
The real story of the day was Ms. Solan. She is a wonderful teacher that now teaches reading remediation but started out teaching science. Before the girls got started, Ms. Solan ordered pizza for the girls and we got to talk to her while we were snacking. Ms. Solan was born and raised in New Jersey in a brownstone where she could look out and see the New York skyline. She said that were it not for Girl Scouts, she would have had a much harder life and probably would not have accomplished anything. Ms. Solan has been a Girl Scout since the age of 7 and has been a lifetime member for the last 20 years. She has worked at the Juliette Gordon Lowe home giving tours and at the Girl Scout National Headquarters in New York. She is also working on her doctorate and when she retires she wants to write. Ms. Solan is the epitome of what a teacher should be! She still loves her students and still loves her job. Alex and I like to see her on Wednesday's when we work the school store, her favorite candy is red AirHeads. Can you tell how much we like her?!?! And I think the girls learned something by just sitting and listening to her tell her Girl Scout story, I certainly did.
Saturday and Sunday were spent at home. I didn't feel well and was running a low grade fever both days. A little boy in Alex's class coughed on me Wednesday. He told me not to worry about it though, he just had a cold. I thanked him for sharing his germs and sanitized my hands.
